300 Immigrants Saved Off Italty Coast. Now What?

Around 300 African immigrants have been saved from a shipwreck by the Italian Navy, in the Mediterranian Sea. The article doesn't suggest that unfortunately for the survivors, they face similar Immigration Policy issues as within Australia. The immigrants will be either deported back to their country or detained. The upside is that if detained, they can attempt to find work from within the grounds of the detention centre and eventually apply for a working visa. Likely.
These policies defy the 1958 Geneova Convention. The right to live in a free land is a clause for those forced to move on from their country out of desperation. Following the current climate in Syria and the violence and economic disparity throughout the African Horn, it's more than understandable why these people are seeking asylum. Yet we don't help.
